Mum went into legitimate Brisbane flooring companies web page, clicked on colours available, three came up, to view more had to click on another icon then a pop up box came up from s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com saying 'Chrome Browser has detected a new virus'. All the while an alarm was sounding continuously.
The box partially obscured the Windows security box. The box had the suspicious 1800 number above to call for assisstance. The windows security box also had same number in red at the bottom (in hindsight pretty obvious but alarm going off caused panic).
Phoned the number, foreign man (Indian accent?) asked for our phone number (which is a private number) in case phone lost connection.
I thought it was legit. He requested I push the windows button and r at same time then box popped up, he directed me to type hh help in box. The sequence of events or boxes that popped up from this point on is a bit fuzzy.
Regardless what he wanted did not work (he commented Mums computer was slow, asked age of computer) then he directed me to type into same box hh www.zyro.com.....Then he to download remote tool that came from Zyro (?) called Supremo.
He became impatient when I would open the download because I wanted to view the Supremo Licence agreement. My gut feeling told me this was sus and I hung up. He rang back...did not answer call.
Then I googled Zyro and it was a build a website page. Supremo was a free remote computer control something or other. All the time the alarm was sounding. Took photos of pages that appeared.
Dodged a bullet??
nah, this ain't a real thing, Microsoft would never make a call out
